You Have the License… But Still Feel Unprepared

No one warns you how overwhelming day one can feel.

“Am I choosing the right medication?”

“What if I miss a red flag?”

“How do I explain this to patients clearly?”

“What if I prescribe something unsafe?”

Textbooks are too dense.

Preceptors move too fast.

And real patients don’t come with clear answers.

This guide exists because confidence doesn’t come from memorization — it comes from frameworks, repetition, and mentorship.

Meet Phillis Mutembete, NP

Hi, I’m Phillis Mutembete PMHNP-BC/FNP-C— a dual-certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner PMHNP and Family Nurse Practitioner

I’ve spent my career in emergency psychiatry, crisis stabilization, and inpatient correctional units, caring for individuals during their most vulnerable moments. I’ve worked with the seriously mentally ill (SMI) population, children and adolescents, and individuals across the spectrum of general mental health.

Along the way, I’ve practiced in both private practice and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), and even helped design a PMHNP course at one of Arizona’s largest universities.

But beyond the credentials, what excites me most is mentoring new providers. I know how overwhelming it can feel starting out. My mission is to help you become a confident, capable prescriber — faster and with less stress.

No. This guide is educational only and does not replace clinical judgment, supervision, or workplace policies. It’s designed to support safer decision-making, not override protocols.

Does it include medication dosing?

Yes. It includes common starting doses, target ranges, titration pearls, and monitoring reminders — written clearly for real-world use.
